Today the trial commenced in earnest, with the Government delivering a scathing, and almost unbelievably inarticulate, opening statement of accusations. Asst. US Attorney Jeffrey Cramer proved, even if he proved nothing else, that in style points the Government can never compete with the private sector.
Cramer?s dry, banal recitation of the USA?s case v. Black et al portrayed Black as an intrinsically dishonest, evil genius capable of hoodwinking the likes of Leslie Wexner, Henry Kissinger, Gov. James Thompson.
More interestingly, Cramer attacked the gall of Black to envision a global media company and the absurd desire to actually influence global politics. Cramer repeated that Black ?was not satisfied running small town papers.? Should Black have been? Is a man of his intellect and resources supposed to rest placated with small successes?
More on the Openings tomorrow.
